Remote Station and Power Control

Bring a compatible station online from the control layer

CAT4OM is built around network-connected clients, making it suitable for operation from another computer in the shack, elsewhere on the local network or through a properly protected remote-access environment.

For supported radios, CAT4OM can also send power-on and power-off commands through the CAT interface. This allows station management to cover more than operating controls: it can participate in bringing equipment online, establishing its normal connection and shutting it down cleanly.

Remote power-on

When a supported serial-connected radio is off, CAT4OM opens a short, dedicated connection using the radio’s saved configuration and sends the PowerOn sequence defined in its XML handbook. The temporary connection is then closed.

This method is intended for radios whose USB or serial control interface remains powered and reachable while the main radio is in standby. Some models require a wake-up preamble or a model-specific sequence before accepting the power command; those details belong to the handbook and remain invisible to the client.

After the radio completes its normal boot process, CAT4OM can start the radio connection and begin publishing live state.

Power-on availability requires:

  • a radio connected through a compatible serial interface;
  • standby hardware that leaves the CAT path reachable;
  • a tested PowerOn command in the selected CAT4OM handbook.

If those conditions are not met, CAT4OM does not advertise the operation as available.

Remote power-off

For a connected and supported radio, CAT4OM sends the handbook’s PowerOff command and then closes the adapter immediately. The service updates the radio to a disconnected state without waiting for a silent serial link to infer that shutdown has completed.

Power-off can be requested from station management or, where supported, through the normal Control channel. This makes the operation available to both operator interfaces and lifecycle automation without duplicating radio-specific protocol logic.

Automatic group lifecycle

Power control can be associated with a group’s startup and shutdown workflow. During automatic startup, leading radios are powered before Radio Followers, allowing the station to respect dependency order. During a full group shutdown, compatible radios can receive their power-off sequence as part of the controlled stop.

Individual radio stops remain distinct from a full powered shutdown. This prevents a routine connection stop from unexpectedly switching off the physical radio.

Remote-ready service architecture

CAT4OM separates station management from time-sensitive radio control:

  • the Management channel handles configuration, handbooks, service and group status, radio lifecycle and compatible power operations;
  • each running group exposes a Control channel for live state, ownership and operating commands.

The same service can therefore support a local desktop interface, a remote panel and an automation process without placing all responsibilities inside one application.

Know what the remote station is doing

Remote control is useful only when it is observable. CAT4OM reports service, group and radio connection state and pushes changes to subscribed clients. Per-radio logs and diagnostics provide additional evidence when a connection cannot be established or a command is unsupported.

Configurable reconnection policies can recover from temporary radio or network interruptions. Radio Follower relationships also report their own health through the Management channel.

Deployment responsibility

CAT4OM provides network control surfaces; it does not remove the need to protect them. Remote deployments should use appropriate authentication, firewall rules, VPN or equivalent secure access, and an independent plan for power, network and transmit safety.

CAT power-on also controls the radio, not the station’s mains supply. External power distribution, antenna switching, amplifiers and other station hardware require their own appropriate control and safety systems.

By combining live network control, radio state, reconnection and model-aware power commands, CAT4OM provides the building blocks for a station that can be started, operated, monitored and stopped in a predictable way.
